“I do not own a company. I do not own a television station. I do not own a government. I do not own an army. I own a backpack with a broken zipper, a bicycle with rust on the chain, and dreams that the grown-ups telling me to be patient for. But I have been watching. I have watched cameras appear on every corner, watching faces before they know our names. I have watched machines learn our voices, our habits, and the little pieces of ourselves we leave behind every day. They call it innovation. They call it progress. I wonder why progress always seems to know so much about ordinary people, yet so little about helping them. I have watched the richest people in the world build fortunes so large they could feed cities, shelter families, and heal communities. While millions wonder whether they can afford medicine, groceries, or a place to sleep. The adults tell me that someday I can be anything, but I look around and ask, anything, for whom? Why does it seem that the rules are different depending on how much money you have? Why are children taught to share while powerful adults compete to own more than they could ever use? Why do forests disappear, rivers become polluted, neighborhoods struggle, and workers grow exhausted, while the wealth of a handful of people grows beyond imagination. I hear people say that ordinary people are replaceable, disposable numbers, data, consumers, workers, but I don't believe that. I believe every mechanic fixing a truck before sunrise, every teacher buying supplies for their own pocket, every nurse working through the night, every parent skipping meals so their children can eat-that is where the world lives. Not in skyscrapers, not in stock prices, not in algorithms. The world belongs to the people who wake up every morning and keep it alive. If technology is powerful, then let it protect freedom instead of shrinking it. If wealth is powerful, then let it build communities instead of walls. If leadership is powerful, then let it serve instead of rule. I do not want a future where every step is watched, every choice is predicted, and every human being is measured only by what they can produce or purchase. I want a future where kindness matters more than market value, where dignity cannot be bought, where no child grows up believing they are less important than a corporation, where no billionaire, politician, or machine gets to decide that ordinary people exist only to serve someone else's ambition. The grown-ups tell me that children are the future. Then perhaps they should listen to us, because we have not yet learned to confuse wealth with wisdom. We have not yet learned to mistake fear for security. We have not yet learned to believe that power is the same thing as greatness. The future should not belong to those who possess the most. It should belong to those who protect the most-not the loudest voices, not the richest names, but the millions of ordinary people whose quiet courage keeps the world turning. I am only a child, but someday this world will belong to my generation. Please leave us one where freedom is still worth inheriting.”

“I'm 13 years old. All of you are adults. Adults, right? You can drive. You can drink. You can vote. I don't have that. When I asked my mom if I could be dropped off here, her response was, "Is it safe? Is it safe? You know, we had someone come up here and talk, and don't teach our children to disobey those who are protecting us. I don't see them protecting me. If you want to talk about those protecting me. I look to those who are standing right now because my trust is in them. I don't trust any of you. I don't trust any of the police officers because you have shown time and time again that we cannot trust you. I go to City High Middle School. Just voted the top high school, top high school in the state. You know what they teach us? Teach us to speak up for yourself. We're IB learners, right? We're smart. None of you are smart?. None of you can recognize murderers. You can identify that there is a problem, but you cannot fix it. I don't know much about the law. Again, I'm young, but I'm pretty sure an accomplice to a murder should be arrested. And right now, all of you sitting and doing nothing are accomplices to a murder.

I am frustrated, and frustrated can't even begin. How absolutely terrified I am to live here. I'm expected. I'm expected to raise my kids here. I'm expected to go outside and walk my five-year-old little brother. God forbid we look too scary. God forbid he accidentally is wearing his hood, and we get the police called on us because we are window shopping to go steal later. I'm not. I don't want to keep coming here. Trust me, this is not how I want to spend my night. I don't want to come here. I don't want to sit here and I don't have to beg you to stop killing people. That's not what I want to do. I have friends. I have other things that I could be doing, and I'm sitting in front of a group of adults who think murder is okay. You can't sit here and tell me you don't think murder is okay because you're allowing it to happen. If you want to talk about God, you want to talk about Jesus. I'm a Christian. I don't know what God some of these people believe in, but it sure ain't mine. I have never read in the Bible where He said we should allow the people who are supposed to be protecting us kill us. I'm sorry, maybe I missed that scripture though. I'm not. I don't want to do this. I don't want to do this. Please, please, do not make me sit here and scream another name. Do not sit here and make me beg. And God forbid that name is mine. God forbid that name is any of these people. God forbid. Thank you.”

Hi, my name is Catalay. I am seven years old, and I am from Dallas.

But as I look around our community today, I know that people, I know that our leaders aren't working for the people anymore, and I'm worried if they aren't thinking about how this affects my generation. As Malcolm X once said, "I am for truth, no matter who tells it. I am for justice, no matter who is for or against. So, I am asking you, what are you gonna do for my generation and my people?

James Tallarico Response: “So, it's young people like you, and I mean real young, that don't have political power, because unlike all of us adults, you can't vote, you can't donate, you can't lobby, and therefore your concerns, your needs get overlooked by people in power. And it's why we need to elect public servants like the people you see sitting around this circle, to make sure that we are fighting for you, that we are fighting for our youngest, tiniest Texans. We need to fight to make sure that your public schools have all the money they need. We need to fight to make sure you've got the health care that you need to grow up big and strong and healthy. And then we've got to make sure that you have an economy when you grow up where you can succeed. where you can give the gift that you're meant to give to the world, and it's our job to make sure that you can give that gift. So, thank you for asking your question, and I'm excited to vote for you one day or hear your sermons. I don't know what you're going to do, but it's taking us to church. Thank You.
